Why viscosity isn’t everything – the 5W-30 example
5W-30 is a popular choice for many modern vehicles, but viscosity alone is not sufficient. To be suitable, an oil must also carry the specific approval from the vehicle manufacturer.
Examples:
- Elf Evolution Full-Tech FE 5W-30 – ACEA C4, Renault RN0720, low-ash (Low SAPS) formulation for engines with DPF.
- Total Quartz Ineo ECS 5W-30 – ACEA C2, PSA B71 2290, intended for gasoline and diesel engines with particulate filters.
An oil with the right specification:
- ensures easy cold starts at low temperatures,
- maintains a stable lubricating film at high temperatures,
- protects engine components against wear and deposits,
- supports lower fuel consumption and reduced emissions.
Always check your owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s database to confirm which oil is approved for your car.
